Giancarlo Ferretti, Italian cycling icon, dies at 85

Giancarlo Ferretti, a prominent figure in Italian cycling known as ‘Sergente di ferro’ (Iron Sergeant), passed away on August 9, 2026, on his 85th birthday.

Ferretti had a distinguished career both as a professional rider and a highly successful sports director. As a rider from 1963 to 1970, he competed for teams such as Legnano, Sanson, and Salvarani, where he served as a key domestique for champion Felice Gimondi.

Following his racing career, he became a renowned director for teams including Bianchi, Ariostea, MG, and Fassa Bortolo. During his tenure in the team car, he guided numerous legendary cyclists to victory, including Moreno Argentin, Gianni Bugno, Paolo Bettini, and Ivan Basso.

The administration of Lugo, his birthplace, expressed deep condolences for the loss of the cycling icon. His funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, August 12.
