FIFA President Gianni Infantino apologizes over scrapped commercial rights plan

FIFA President Gianni Infantino issued a formal apology to the FIFA Council in Zurich regarding the management and communication of the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project. The scrapped proposal sought to sell a 20% stake in World Cup commercial rights to a private investment firm, a move that triggered significant backlash and calls for his resignation from organizations including UEFA.

During a three-and-a-half-hour meeting, Council members expressed frustration over the lack of transparency. FIFA Vice-President Debbie Hewitt stated that Infantino must provide specific FFE documentation to prove his fitness to lead, noting that many questions remained unanswered. UEFA is reportedly exploring legal avenues in the United States to access documents related to the project.

In response to the controversy, FIFA presented a new Solidarity Program by Surplus. This initiative aims to distribute $6.35 billion for football development between 2027 and 2030, utilizing exceptional commercial revenues from the World Cup. Under this plan, each of the 211 member associations would receive $25 million, subject to approval at the FIFA Congress in December.
