Gianni Infantino defies CONCACAF request to attend Caribbean youth tournament

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has sparked significant tension within international football by attending a Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-14 tournament in the Dominican Republic, despite a formal request from CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani to stay away. Montagliani argued that Infantino's presence would overshadow the youth development event and draw excessive media attention to FIFA's ongoing governance crisis.

The controversy stems from the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, a plan to sell approximately 20% of World Cup commercial rights to private investors for an estimated $4.2 billion. Although the project was withdrawn following intense opposition from UEFA, the AFC, and CONCACAF, the proposal has left a lasting rift in leadership. Critics, including UEFA, have stated that “the soul and governance of football are not assets for sale.”

Infantino's visit to the Caribbean is viewed by some as a strategic move to secure votes from regional federations ahead of the March 2027 FIFA presidential election. While Infantino has used social media to highlight his efforts to strengthen regional football cooperation, several CONCACAF member associations have expressed anger, accusing him of hijacking the CFU meeting to lobby for support and announce delayed development funding.
