Kozo Tashima announces bid for FIFA presidency

Kozo Tashima, the honorary president of the Japan Football Association (JFA), has officially announced his intention to run for the FIFA presidency in the March 2027 elections. Tashima, a 68-year-old former Japan international and current FIFA Council member, received unanimous support from the JFA board for his candidacy.

Tashima stated his campaign aims to promote honesty, integrity, and sound governance within global football. He specifically cited concerns regarding recent decisions during the 2026 World Cup, including the handling of a red card for a US player and entry issues for an Iranian team, as motivations for his run.

Tashima joins Ramon Vega as a declared challenger to incumbent Gianni Infantino. To qualify, candidates must secure official support from at least five of FIFA’s 211 member associations by November 18 and pass an eligibility review. The election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco.

Separately, the eligibility of Gianni Infantino for a fourth term remains a subject of legal debate. While FIFA statutes limit presidents to three terms, the organization does not count Infantino’s initial period from 2016 to 2019 toward this limit. Former FIFA official Miguel Maduro has challenged this interpretation, suggesting the matter could be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
