Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, is facing intense political pressure and calls for resignation from various footballing bodies and legends. The controversy was ignited by a proposal to sell commercial rights of FIFA tournaments to private equity investors, a plan that was eventually withdrawn following widespread backlash.

Several European football associations, including the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the Irish Football Association (IFA), and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI), have officially withdrawn their support for Infantino's potential reelection in March 2027. UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has also criticized Infantino's leadership and indicated that while he will not run for the presidency himself, Infantino may face a significant challenger.

In contrast, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and several football legends, including Cafu and Roberto Carlos, have expressed support for Infantino. Cameroon Football Federation President Samuel Eto’o defended the FIFA president, arguing that his leadership has significantly benefited the development of football in Africa and that the current criticisms are largely driven by political maneuvering ahead of the upcoming elections.
