Swiss Football Association withdraws support for Gianni Infantino

The Swiss Football Association (SFV) has formally withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino’s bid for re-election as FIFA president, scheduled for March 2027. The decision, reached during an executive committee meeting on September 25, 2026, follows a reassessment of recent developments within the international governing body.

The SFV cited fundamental concerns regarding FIFA's leadership, governance, transparency, and decision-making processes. Specific issues mentioned include the regulatory clarity surrounding the Folarin Balogun case and concerns related to the FIFA Forward Enterprise project, a proposal to allow private investment in FIFA commercial rights that was recently withdrawn following significant opposition.

This move by the Swiss association, which is based in the same country as FIFA and UEFA, joins a growing list of European football associations—including those from England, Wales, France, and Serbia—that have also withdrawn their endorsements. In response to the mounting pressure, UEFA has pledged to present a competing candidate for the presidency before the November 2026 deadline.

Gianni Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, has expressed openness to discussions regarding institutional reform. He also indicated a readiness to support increased financial contributions to the 211 member associations, a move that may be addressed at an upcoming FIFA council meeting.
