Giorgos Mazonakis: Tributes pour in following death of Greek singer

The Greek music community is mourning the death of singer Giorgos Mazonakis at age 54. Colleagues and fellow artists have shared emotional tributes following his passing. Sakis Rouvas, a long-time friend and contemporary since 1991, performed ‘Aniko Se Mena’ during a concert in Cyprus to honor him, describing Mazonakis as a man of great heart and sensitivity. Giannis Vardinidis also paid tribute, noting how Mazonakis broke stereotypes within the ‘laiko’ music genre.

The death has also sparked public debate. Composer Sotiris Tsafoulias criticized Aphrodite Manou for her comments regarding the large crowds attending the funeral, calling her stance ‘arrogant.’ Manou responded by stating her comments were misinterpreted and that she had no personal animosity toward the singer. Additionally, there are ongoing discussions regarding the media coverage of the event and investigations into the circumstances of his death.
