Giannis Antetokounmpo Flexes Trade Leverage as Teams Court Bucks Star

NBA forward Giannis Antetokounmpo, with one guaranteed year left on his Milwaukee Bucks contract and a player option for 2027‑28, is using his trade leverage to dictate his future destination. Insider Chris Haynes said, "He has tons of power… If a team he doesn’t want to go to says, ‘We want to trade,’ he’ll say, ‘You’re only getting me for the season, and I’m out.’" Teams such as the Miami Heat and, previously, the New York Knicks are seen as preferred destinations, while the Heat is currently viewed as the leading suitor.

Portland Trail Blazers have emerged as a willing bidder despite lacking long‑term guarantees. ESPN insider Shams Charania reported the Blazers are prepared to pursue Giannis "no matter the risk," even as they rebuild around young talent and recent acquisitions. Other clubs—including the Houston Rockets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers—have also expressed interest, but Giannis’s preferences will shape any eventual deal, leaving the Bucks vulnerable to losing leverage in the upcoming trade talks.
