Giannis Ioannidis calls Greek political system ‘ineffective’

Giannis Ioannidis, a Greek‑born medical professor now based at Stanford University in California, told the TV program “Antitheses” on Kriti TV that Greece no longer has an “aristocracy” but suffers from “ineffectiveness” in its political life. Ioannidis, who previously headed the Laboratory of Hygiene and Epidemiology at the University of Ioannina, left Greece permanently in 2010 to take up his position at Stanford.

In the interview he criticised the government’s handling of the COVID‑19 pandemic and described the current political system as “the burnt face of Greece”. He highlighted his academic impact, noting more than 730,000 citations of his work, and urged a reassessment of how social, economic and scientific performance is measured in the country.
