Giannis Ioannidis warns Greece faces systemic inefficiency and institutional crisis

Professor Giannis Ioannidis, a leading Greek scholar, criticised what he called a regime of “generalised inefficiency” in Greece, saying the country is plagued by marginalisation of elites, devaluation of institutions and economic suffocation that blocks talented individuals. He highlighted concrete developments fueling the crisis: the 200‑metre Riviera Tower skyscraper in the Elliniko area, the creation of the Hellenic Heritage Organisation that hands a private‑run monopoly over archaeological sites for up to a century, the push toward private universities, and a massive industrial project in Kozani dubbed “Fair Transition”. Ioannidis warned that these trends threaten the very existence of the nation, fearing Greece could disappear from the map. His remarks were made on the TV program “Antitheses” on Crete TV and in an interview on Giorgos Sachinis’ show, urging a return to truth‑based public discourse and responsibility toward science, society and justice.
