Giannis Maniatis urges EU sanctions over Turkish airspace violations

Giannis Maniatis, Vice President of the Socialists and Democrats Group and head of the PASOK European group, has submitted a written question to the European Commission calling for sanctions against Turkey. The request follows a series of provocations in the Aegean, including a long-duration flight by a Turkish unmanned aerial vehicle over the Thracian Sea, the Alexandroupoli region, and Samothrace on Friday, August 28.

Maniatis noted a significant increase in Turkish airspace violations, stating that incursions exceeded 247 through July of this year, compared to 225 in the entirety of 2025. He specifically highlighted an incident on August 18 involving 25 violations and an engagement between Greek and Turkish armed F-16 fighter jets.

The inquiry asks the Commission what measures it will take to protect Greek sovereign rights and suggests the establishment of a Southern Borders Observatory or the extension of the Eastern Flank Watch to include Greece.
