Giannis Negrepontis: Remembering the Greek poet and lyricist

Giannis Negrepontis, a prominent Greek poet, lyricist, and resistance writer, passed away on September 22, 1991, at the age of 61. Born in Volos in 1930, Negrepontis was a significant figure in post-war Greek literature and music, known for combining poetry with social commentary.

His work often addressed themes of freedom, justice, and the struggles of the common person. He was ideologically aligned with the Left and faced political persecution, including arrest and exile to Gyaros and Leros following the 1967 coup.

Other notable collaborators included Mikis Theodorakis, Christos Leontis, and Loukianos Kilaidonis. His diverse literary output spanned poetry, prose, theater, and children's literature, leaving a lasting impact on the Greek cultural landscape.
