Gianpaolo Balzano elected President of AISP

Gianpaolo Balzano has been elected President of the Italian Association for the Study of the Pancreas (AISP) for the 2026-2029 term. The announcement was made during the association's 50th National Congress in Bergamo.

Balzano, an associate professor of General Surgery at the University of Insubria and head of Pancreas Surgery at the Ospedale di Circolo in Varese, succeeds Silvia Carrara. His leadership will focus on evolving pancreatic disease care toward more effective, patient-centered models, particularly in oncology. He aims to integrate clinical and technological innovation with improved organizational and healthcare models to ensure equitable access to excellence.

In Italy, approximately 14,000 new cases of pancreatic cancer are diagnosed annually. The disease has a poor prognosis, with a five-year survival rate of just over 10%. Roughly half of patients present with metastases at the onset of symptoms, and only 20% are diagnosed at an early stage that allows for surgical intervention.
