Giant Cretaceous Dinosaur Footprint Discovered Near Burgos, Spain

A fossilized dinosaur footprint measuring about 78 cm in length and 35 cm in thickness was recovered in the Sierra de la Demanda near the town of Burgos. The imprint, dated to roughly 125 million years ago in the early Cretaceous, shows five toe marks and drag grooves from the animal's foot, indicating it belonged to a large sauropod of the Titanosauriform group. Researchers estimate the animal's hind‑limb height at the hip to have been around 3.1 m, making it the first giant dinosaur of this age recorded in the region.

The footprint was discovered by museum guide Luis Ángel Izquierdo and retrieved by the Museum of Dinosaurs together with the Archaeological and Paleontological Collective of Salas de los Infantes. Heavy machinery was required to extract the rock‑filled mold, which has now been transferred to the Museum of Dinosaurs in Salas de los Infantes for cleaning, consolidation and further study.
