Giant freshwater ray and rare pirarucu parental care filmed in Brazil's rivers

A drone captured an enormous freshwater ray swimming near the surface of a tributary of Brazil's Araguaia River. The animal was described as rivaling the size of a small fishing boat. Freshwater rays are among the world's largest river fish and inhabit only South America, where they contribute to ecological balance. Experts advise caution because the ray's tail spine can cause injury if threatened.

Separate footage from the Rio Teles Pires in Mato Grosso showed a pair of pirarucu guiding a group of fry, a rare example of parental behavior in the species. The recordings underline the rich biodiversity of Brazil's inland waterways and the importance of preserving these habitats.
