Giant freshwater stingray sets world record in Mekong River
A giant freshwater stingray weighing approximately 300 kg and measuring over 3 meters in length has been identified in the Mekong River in Cambodia. The discovery was made by fisherman Kon Sophol near Koh Preah island.
Following the catch, a research team led by biologist Zeb Hogan from the Wonders of the Mekong project arrived to conduct measurements. The stingray was confirmed to be a female and its record-breaking size was officially recognized by Guinness World Records. This discovery surpasses the previous record held by the Mekong giant catfish.
After the scientific measurements were completed, the stingray was released back into the Mekong River. The event serves as a significant milestone for the Megafishes Project, which has been researching and working to protect the world's largest freshwater fish species since 2005.
