Giant Oceanic Manta Ray Recognized as Key Species in Tropical Waters

The giant oceanic manta ray (Mobula birostris) inhabits warm tropical seas worldwide. It can reach a wingspan of over seven metres and weigh more than two tonnes, yet it feeds mainly on plankton and small fish, using its cephalic lobes to channel food to its mouth. Its graceful, wing‑like swimming gives the appearance of flying underwater.

Scientists note the species plays an important role in marine ecosystem balance but faces threats from by‑catch, pollution and habitat loss. Conservation programs led by researchers and environmental groups aim to study and protect populations, emphasizing that despite its size the manta poses no danger to humans and remains a spectacular sight for divers.
