Giant Saltwater Crocodile Evacuated from Sambas, West Kalimantan

A roughly 30‑year‑old, 4.5‑metre saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus) was rescued from a fish‑farm pond in Desa Jelu Air, Kecamatan Jawai Selatan, Kabupaten Sambas, West Kalimantan. The animal had become trapped in a net and was reported by residents to the local police, who forwarded the case to the Rapid Response Team of Balai Pengelolaan Kelautan Pontianak.

On 27 July 2026 the team arrived, released the crocodile from the net, performed health checks, and re‑secured the animal to prevent further injury. It was then transferred to a temporary holding facility at the Balai PK office in Kubu Raya for observation and rehabilitation, in line with the protected‑species procedures set out in Ministerial Decree No. 66/2025. The community assisted in moving the animal and continues to monitor its condition.
