Giant squid footage captured near Japan's Ogasawara Islands

Archival footage has resurfaced showing the first recording of a living giant squid, a species previously understood primarily through carcasses found on shores. A major breakthrough occurred in 2006 when Japanese researchers used bait near the Ogasawara Islands to capture the first footage of a live specimen.

Giant squid can reach lengths of approximately 43 feet but inhabit extremely deep, dark ocean environments, making direct observation difficult. Following the 2006 discovery, scientists recorded a live giant squid in its natural habitat in 2012, and another expedition documented a living individual in the Gulf of Mexico in 2019. These sightings, aided by advanced deep-sea imaging tools, allow researchers to study the movement and behavior of the animals in their natural environment rather than relying on washed-up remains.
