Giant Tiger store closure in downtown Winnipeg sparks resident concerns

The Giant Tiger outlet on Donald Street and Ellice Avenue in downtown Winnipeg is scheduled to close on Nov. 7, 2026. The closure eliminates one of the few affordable grocery options for residents of the Exchange District and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Local shoppers, many of whom walk to the store, warn that the loss will force longer commutes, higher transportation costs and greater reliance on food banks. Dave Feniuk, general manager of Agape Table food bank, said demand for assistance has risen in recent years and expects a further surge. Food‑security advocates such as Kyle Mason of Food Matters Manitoba note that the area already struggles with access to healthy, low‑cost food.

Giant Tiger said the decision was made after careful analysis and is not taken lightly, adding that it is working directly with affected employees. The store’s closure highlights the challenges of maintaining retail services in low‑income urban districts and raises concerns about a growing food desert in Winnipeg.
