Gibbon Conservation Center celebrates 50 years of primate care

The Gibbon Conservation Center, located in the Santa Clarita Valley north of Los Angeles, has spent 50 years dedicated to the care of endangered primates. The institution currently provides care for approximately 40 gibbons across five different species.

Founded by the late Alan Mootnick, a self-taught primatologist, the center evolved from a small animal collection into a globally recognized research and conservation institution. Mootnick contributed to the scientific community by publishing papers and assisting researchers with species identification and vocalization analysis.

Following Mootnick’s death in 2011 from heart surgery complications, the center is led by Director Gabi Skollar. Skollar, who moved from Hungary to the United States in 2005 to work under Mootnick, continues his mission of primate conservation and research.
