Gibraltar Border Fences Removed Under EU‑UK Deal

An agreement between the European Union, the United Kingdom and Spain has officially eliminated the physical barrier that separated Gibraltar from the Spanish municipality of La Línea. The treaty took effect at midnight on 14 July 2026, ending more than a century of frontier controls.

The removal is expected to ease daily commutes for thousands of cross‑border workers, reduce traffic bottlenecks and boost tourism to the enclave. At the same time, the deal introduces a 15 % value‑added tax on goods imported into Gibraltar and requires compliance with EU product standards, ending the territory’s long‑standing tax‑free status. Air travel will still require passport checks for non‑Schengen passengers.

Spanish authorities see the change as a step toward smoother cooperation, while Gibraltar’s businesses express concern over the loss of a competitive fiscal advantage. The arrangement does not alter Gibraltar’s status as a British Overseas Territory.
