Gibraltar Border Opens, Schengen Visa Rules Extend to Territory

Spain and the United Kingdom have removed passport checks at the Gibraltar–Spain land crossing, ending a three‑century era of strict controls. The change allows commuters from La Línea de la Concepción and tourists to move freely without showing identity documents, easing daily travel for thousands of cross‑border workers.

A provisional agreement between the UK and the EU, effective 15 July 2026, also aligns Gibraltar’s short‑stay visa regime with the Schengen area. Travelers now need a valid Schengen visa for brief visits to Gibraltar, rather than a separate UK visa. The new rule particularly affects Tunisian nationals, who must use their Schengen visas for trips to Gibraltar, offering a smoother pathway for those already holding such visas.
