Gibraltar border removal sparks Spanish taxi ban and calls for cooperation

The Government of Gibraltar announced that Spanish taxis will continue to be prohibited from operating in the territory even after the new open‑border phase following the agreement that removed the Verja. Transport inspectors will be stationed at the frontier to monitor activity, issue reports and impose sanctions, stating that the regulation governing cross‑border transport "has not changed". Authorities asked the public to report any incidents so they can be dealt with quickly.

In the Spanish autonomous city of Melilla, the political party Nueva Melilla praised the Gibraltar development as a "historic event" and a sign that cooperation can replace physical barriers. The party said the example shows that, one day, the fence separating Melilla from nearby Nador could be removed, creating opportunities for joint investment, trade, tourism, culture, health and education.
