Gibraltar border traffic resumes normal flow after early completion of works

The construction work on the Gibraltar side of the frontier has been finished ahead of schedule, allowing vehicle traffic to return to the regular entry and exit lanes around the clock. The night‑time diversion through the Eastgate commercial gate, originally set to remain in force until 1 July, was lifted after coordination with Spanish police confirmed safety.

Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picardo thanked cross‑border workers, contractors, the Technical Services Department and Spanish authorities for the swift completion. The pedestrian crossing at Four Corners continues unchanged.

The reopening comes as the “Verja” fence is set to be removed on 15 July under the provisional EU‑UK treaty, which will shift border controls to Gibraltar’s port and airport, integrate the territory into the Schengen area and end long queues for the roughly 15,000 daily cross‑border workers and 40,000 British residents.
