Gibraltar Border Women Honored in New Exhibition on Historic Smuggling

An exhibition in Jimena de la Frontera commemorates the "matuteras," the women who smuggled food, coffee, soap and even penicillin across the Gibraltar border during post‑civil‑war hardship. The display, organized by the Casa de la Memoria La Sauceda, features panels that recount how these women concealed goods in hidden pockets of their clothing and travelled up to 50 km on foot or train from the Sierra de Cádiz and Málaga to La Línea and Gibraltar.

The exhibition opens as the EU‑UK agreement on the Gibraltar frontier entered into force at midnight on Wednesday, formally ending the historic border checkpoint that shaped daily life for the local communities. The tribute highlights the role of the matuteras as “engines of survival” amid repression, hunger and loss of family members during the Franco era.
