Gibraltar Ministry of Equality conducts accessibility training
The Ministry of Equality’s Supported Needs and Disability Office (SNDO) has conducted a series of three training sessions aimed at improving accessibility and inclusive design within Gibraltar’s built environment. The initiative seeks to enhance the expertise of those responsible for designing, managing, and maintaining buildings.
The first session was an Access Auditor Course for HM Government of Gibraltar facilities managers and building custodians from various sectors, including the Care Agency, Department of Education, Gibraltar Health Authority, Gibraltar Cultural Services, and the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority. This training covered local and UK legislation, such as Gibraltar Building Rules Part R and UK Building Regulations Part M, while providing practical guidance on conducting access audits and preparing professional reports.
A second session served as a refresher course for staff from the SNDO, Building Control, and Town Planning Departments to ensure a consistent approach to accessibility across government departments. The final session targeted local architectural practices, focusing on inclusive design principles and the various types of disabilities to assist professionals during the development of new buildings.
