Gibraltar prepares for treaty rollout as border fence removal approaches

The Government of Gibraltar convened two sectoral meetings to guide businesses through the implementation of the post‑Brexit UK‑EU treaty. Hosted in Ince’s Hall, the sessions covered pharmaceutical and medical product regulations, special customs procedures and bonded warehouses, and were led by Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Joseph Garcia and Business Minister Gemma Arias‑Vasquez. Officials answered detailed questions from firms, promising further briefings for small‑business groups.

At the same time, the physical barrier separating Gibraltar from La Línea is slated to be taken down by 15 July, marking the start of provisional free movement of people and goods under the same agreement. About 15,000 daily cross‑border commuters stand to benefit, with expectations of around 300 direct jobs linked to new airport operations and additional indirect employment in transport, hospitality and services. The removal is portrayed as ending decades of uncertainty, improving security, and attracting investment by providing a stable legal framework for the Gibraltar‑Spain border region.
