Gibraltar prepares new border routes as EU‑UK treaty takes effect

During the nights of Friday 19 June and Saturday 20 June, Gibraltar opened a temporary pedestrian crossing and reduced vehicle entry to a single lane while infrastructure works continue ahead of the provisional entry of the EU‑UK treaty on Gibraltar, scheduled for 15 July. The changes are expected to cause brief delays, especially during peak traffic, and full lane operation should resume early Monday after work finishes Sunday night.

Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said reversing the agreement would be “stupid”, stressing that the deal will remove the fence (the Verja) and bring greater fluidity and shared prosperity for residents on both sides of the border. He warned any future political move to suspend the treaty would harm the benefits the agreement provides to citizens of Gibraltar, Spain and the wider EU.

The temporary measures and political comments are part of the coordinated effort by Gibraltar and Spanish authorities to minimise disruptions as the new border model is implemented.
