Gibran impeachment discourse intensifies following Constitutional Court ruling
Discussions regarding the potential impeachment of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka have resurfaced following a Constitutional Court ruling on October 6, 2026. The political focus has shifted toward President Prabowo Subianto, whose influence over the governing coalition is seen as a decisive factor in the matter.
Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Mahfud MD noted that the Prabowo-Gibran coalition holds more than 80 percent of the seats in the House of Representatives (DPR RI), presenting a significant political hurdle for any impeachment attempt. He suggested that the process would depend on whether President Prabowo allows the DPR to follow constitutional mechanisms without political intervention.
Legal experts, including Abd Aziz of KALAM NU, have emphasized that the Constitutional Court's decision to declare the petition inadmissible was a procedural matter. He noted that the ruling does not inherently prove or disprove the validity of Gibran's educational documents, stating that the substance of the allegations regarding educational requirements still requires assessment through appropriate legal institutions and mechanisms.
