Gibran Rakabuming Raka faces Constitutional Court hearing over diploma dispute
The Constitutional Court of Indonesia has entered the evidentiary stage of a lawsuit seeking the disqualification of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. A central point of contention involves a certificate of educational equivalence issued by the Ministry of Education and Culture, which claims Gibran's studies at UTS Insearch in Sydney, Australia, are equivalent to an Indonesian high school diploma. However, the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra reported that there is no record of Gibran applying for a School Certificate service.
During court proceedings, former KPU commissioner I Gusti Putu Artha testified that while the KPU is procedurally required to accept all submitted documents, it maintains a verification mechanism to determine their legal validity. Constitutional law expert Zainal Arifin Mochtar noted that the court has the opportunity to address long-standing constitutional concerns through this case, suggesting the court should look beyond formalistic legal text to the broader constitutional purpose.
