Gibran Rakabuming Raka education controversy sparks political debate
Political debate continues in Indonesia regarding the educational credentials of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka following a Constitutional Court ruling. The Court stated it found no documents proving Gibran possesses a high school diploma or equivalent from an overseas institution, though it noted it could not disqualify him from office based on this finding.
Komarudin Watubun of the PDI Perjuangan (PDIP) dismissed claims that the controversy is a political operation, suggesting that the issue could be resolved simply by presenting the original diplomas in court. Meanwhile, Ahmad Ali of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) called for an end to the debate, urging respect for international educational standards in Singapore and Australia, where Gibran completed his studies.
In a separate development, PDIP announced the dismissal of Klaten Regent Hamenang Wajar Ismoyo following his designation as a suspect in a corruption case involving bribery and gratification by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).
