Gibson and Baggs launch HiFi DNA acoustic pickup system

Gibson and acoustic amplification specialist Baggs have launched the HiFi DNA pickup system, a new technology designed to bridge the gap between studio acoustic guitar sound and live PA amplification.

The system utilizes a dual Class A preamp architecture. Unlike traditional pickups that sum signals early, HiFi DNA treats each sensor as an individual studio channel with a dedicated, custom-voiced discrete preamp before blending them. This approach is intended to prevent the muddying of signals and preserve high-resolution detail. Baggs founder Lloyd R. Baggs compared the architecture to using a pair of choir microphones to capture different aspects of the instrument.

The hardware features a new sensor platform that is lighter and more responsive than previous designs, aimed at capturing both string detail and body resonance. The system is currently being rolled out across Gibson’s Modern and Original acoustic collections, with standalone versions for retrofitting existing guitars expected to follow. Additionally, the technology aims to provide gain before feedback comparable to under-saddle pickups, allowing for more confident live performances.
