Romania football team faces crisis after Nations League defeats

The Romanian national football team is facing significant pressure following two consecutive defeats in the Nations League, losing 1-2 to Sweden and 2-4 to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Head coach Gheorghe Hagi has taken full responsibility for the results, admitting that his tactical experiments and the decision to use different lineups for both matches failed to produce the desired cohesion.

Critics and former internationals have questioned Hagi’s methods, suggesting he is applying club-level training principles to a national team setting where time is limited. There are growing concerns regarding the team’s potential relegation to League C if they fail to secure points in upcoming matches against Poland and Sweden.

Despite the backlash, Romanian Football Federation technical director Mihai Stoichiță confirmed that Hagi will remain in his position. Hagi has called for broader systemic changes in Romanian sports, urging political leaders to invest in infrastructure and youth development to address the nation's declining performance on the international stage.
