Gietrzwałd apparition archive set for conservation ahead of 150‑year jubilee

The Marshal's Office of the Warmian‑Masurian Voivodeship has approved funding to conserve the historic documentation of the Marian apparitions in Gietrzwałd, which occurred about 150 years ago. The archive, held by the Archdiocese of Warmia, contains extensive records – protocols of interviews with the visionaries, reports by the then parish priest Augustyn Weichsel, transcriptions of the messages, and commission findings – most of which were written in German with some Polish entries. Because the paper is thin, brittle and the binding deteriorated, the collection has long been inaccessible. The planned conservation work will repair the fragile pages, re‑bind the volume and make it suitable for exhibition before the upcoming jubilee celebrations next year.

Archdiocesan archivist ks. prof. Andrzej Kopiczko highlighted the cultural and historical importance of the sources, while deputy voivodeship marshal Maria Bąkowska welcomed the project as a means to preserve Warmia’s heritage. The effort aims to safeguard a unique testimony of regional religious history and to allow broader public access.
