Gietrzwałd apparitions: Virgin Mary messages in 1877
In 1877, during the period of Prussian Kulturkampf and Germanization, religious apparitions occurred in Gietrzwałd. The events began on June 27 when 13-year-old Justyna Szafryńska witnessed a bright figure, later joined by 12-year-old Barbara Samulowska.
On June 30, acting on the instruction of parish priest Augustyn Weichsel, the girls asked the figure what she required. The figure responded in Polish, stating, “I demand that you pray the Rosary every day.” The figure also identified herself as the Immaculate Conception.
The apparitions, which lasted until September 8, 1877, held significant national importance because the messages were delivered in the Polish language during a time of intense Germanization. The figure called for prayer, penance, obedience to the Church, and sobriety, while also offering messages regarding the future freedom of the Polish Church.
