Gifhorn launches housing alliance to increase affordable living

The city of Gifhorn, Germany, has launched the ‘Bündnis für Wohnungsbau Gifhorn’ (Gifhorn Housing Construction Alliance) to address rising rental costs and create more affordable living spaces. The initiative involves a partnership between the City of Gifhorn, the Gifhorner Wohnungsbau-Genossenschaft eG (GWG), the Gifhorner Grundstücks- und Erschließungsgesellschaft mbH (GEG), and Stadtwerke Gifhorn GmbH.

A primary focus of the alliance is to support individuals who do not qualify for a housing entitlement certificate (Wohnberechtigungsschein) but find market-rate rents for new builds to be a significant financial burden. The group aims to utilize municipal land policy, economic construction methods, suitable financing models, and long-term management to provide more affordable housing options. Mayor Matthias Nerlich stated that the goal is to ensure housing remains accessible to everyone and to make the city more equitable.
