Gift Oladele sentenced to 25 years for rape in Wales
Gift Oladele, a 24-year-old Nigerian national, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the violent rape of a 19-year-old woman in Wrexham, Wales. The sentence includes 17 years in custody followed by eight years on an extended licence, alongside an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and a lifetime restraining order.
The attack occurred on September 7, when Oladele followed the victim after she left a takeaway shop, eventually dragging her into a wooded area. The victim described a terrifying ordeal where she was overpowered and physically assaulted. Following the incident, Oladele reportedly made degrading remarks to the victim, including telling her, ‘At least you have been raped by someone good-looking.’
The case has sparked significant public outcry in the UK due to Oladele’s criminal history and his ability to avoid deportation. Despite previous convictions for sexual offenses, including a 2022 conviction, Oladele successfully challenged deportation to Nigeria by citing Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which protects the right to private and family life. At the time of the Wrexham assault, he was already out on bail for another rape allegation in Manchester.
