Gifu Primary School receives new WASH facility in Guadalcanal
A new water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facility has been established at Gifu Primary School in the Barana highlands of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands. The project aims to replace the school’s aging and inadequate toilet facilities to improve student health, safety, and dignity.
The facility was funded by the European Union through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) as part of the Provincial Governance and Service Delivery (PGSD) project. It was implemented in partnership with the Guadalcanal Provincial Government and includes new ablution facilities, a shower for girls, and two 10,000-litre water storage tanks.
UNDP Resident Representative Munkhtuya Altangerel and Guadalcanal Premier Willie Atu formally handed over the facility. Altangerel noted that the project serves as an investment in safer learning environments, while emphasizing that the long-term success of the infrastructure depends on community ownership and responsible maintenance.
