Gigalab expands medical diagnostic manufacturing across Africa

Moroccan company Gigalab is transitioning from a laboratory solution distributor to a manufacturer of medical diagnostic tools to serve the African continent. Founded in 2007, the company shifted its focus toward local production following the COVID-19 pandemic, which prompted the development of home-use saliva tests.

Gigalab currently produces rapid tests for several diseases, including HIV, hepatitis, malaria, mpox, and syphilis. The company is collaborating with the Moroccan Ministry of Health and Social Protection to develop a new generation of multiplex tests capable of detecting multiple pathogens from a single sample. Additionally, a May agreement with the Mohammed VI Foundation for Sciences and Health aims to integrate these Moroccan-developed rapid tests into standard care pathways.

The group is pursuing an expansion strategy across Africa, already providing solutions to Niger and Benin. It is also establishing partnerships in Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal, and Cameroon to bolster local production of medical technologies.
