Gigawatts Global commits $500 million to solar at Nigerian universities
Gigawatts Global chief executive officer Yosef Abramowitz announced a financing package of up to $500 million for solar power plants at Nigerian universities. The pledge was made in Abuja during the 2026 NextGen Innovation Challenge National Showcase and the launch of the Tinubu Light Initiative, organized by the National Board for Technology Incubation.
The funding will cover about 90 % of project costs, with each university‑based solar facility expected to generate 10–20 MW, exceeding campus needs. Surplus electricity will be supplied to surrounding rural communities through prepaid metering, supporting broader rural electrification. Gigawatts Global plans to source panels, racking, cables and maintenance services locally, creating jobs and keeping operations and hardware production within Nigeria.
