Gigi Becali faces scrutiny over church construction near Techirghiol Lake

Businessman Gigi Becali is facing scrutiny regarding the construction of a wooden church near Techirghiol Lake in the Tuzla commune. The Romanian Ornithological Society reported that works were carried out in a protected area included in the Natura 2000 network, which is classified as a wetland of international importance. Authorities found that the land had been leveled and access roads and foundations were established without the necessary permits.

Becali has defended the project, stating that the church is a wooden structure and does not require a construction permit, only a site permit. He claimed that concrete was used only for leveling the ground and that he removed concrete plates to minimize environmental impact.

Reports indicate that the family controls a significant amount of land in the area. While the specific plot for the church is approximately 7,000 to 7,800 square meters, the total area controlled by the family in the vicinity is estimated to be around five hectares, or 50,000 square meters.
