Gijón celebrates Semana Grande opening and Jovellanos floral tribute

Antón Meana delivered the opening address for the Semana Grande de Gijón, marking the start of the city’s major summer festival. The ceremony was captured in a series of photographs released to the public.

On the same weekend, residents placed a floral offering to the Enlightenment figure Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos in the Plaza del Seis de Agosto. The tribute, also documented in images, formed part of the cultural program surrounding the festival.

Both events took place in early August 2026 and highlight Gijón’s tradition of public celebrations and historical remembrance.
