Gijón launches census of vacant commercial premises

The Gijón City Council, through the Gijón Impulsa programme and in cooperation with the Union of Merchants of Asturias, is compiling a census of empty retail and commercial spaces in the city. Street‑level visits are being combined with water‑consumption records from the municipal water company (EMA), tax information from the Economic Activities Tax (IAE) and municipal licence data to identify premises that are likely unused.

The effort, part of the Local Commercial Orientation Plan (PLOC), aims to produce a mapped register of vacant locations by zone, providing a data basis for future projects such as targeted incentives for new entrepreneurs, real‑estate analyses and commercial‑area revitalisation.
