Gijón researchers test barriers to contain Portuguese man o' war

Researchers in Gijón are conducting experiments to determine if pollution barriers can be used to contain Portuguese man o' war populations and prevent them from reaching local beaches.

The trial involves placing approximately 20 to 25 specimens within a 25-meter enclosure at the Sahones dock. The experiment, funded by the municipal environment department, is a collaborative effort between the University of Oviedo, the Bioparc Aquarium, and the Oceanographic center.

Scientists are testing whether conventional barriers or those with submerged nets can contain the organisms without causing excessive stress. A primary concern is whether the animals will release their tentacles, which would pose a greater danger to swimmers. While the barriers may be effective in calmer areas like Poniente and Arbeyal, researchers suggest they may be less suitable for open beaches like San Lorenzo due to wave action and the risk of tentacle breakage.
