Gilé mining concession riots leave three seriously injured

Violent unrest erupted in the village of Namihale, located in the Gilé district of Zambézia province, following a confrontation at a mining concession owned by a Chinese entrepreneur. The conflict reportedly began when local residents sought explanations regarding the diversion of water from the Namirue River, allegedly caused by gold mining activities that blocked water access for the community for approximately one week.

During the escalation, a group of individuals invaded the mining site, using blunt instruments to destroy equipment, including a backhoe. The confrontation resulted in three serious injuries, including one Chinese national who was beaten by the crowd. Local reports indicate the violence was triggered after a Chinese citizen allegedly fired shots at a resident during the dispute.

The Mozambique Republic Police (PRM) intervened to restore order. During the operation, one alleged ringleader was shot in the arm and taken to the Nampula Central Hospital. Authorities have detained two individuals, while a third suspect remains at large. Police investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend all participants involved in the vandalism and assaults.
