Gilas Pilipinas beats Iran to boost FIBA World Cup hopes
Gilas Pilipinas strengthened its bid for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup by securing a 68-56 victory over Iran in the Asian Qualifiers at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The win completes a Window 4 sweep for the Philippines, improving their record to 4-4 in Group E.
Dwight Ramos and Juan Gomez de Liaño both led the scoring with 16 points each. Ramos’ performance was particularly notable as he played despite battling flu-like symptoms earlier in the day, requiring a medical drip to compete. Kai Sotto contributed a double-double with 13 points and 16 rebounds.
The victory follows a recent 82-81 overtime win against Jordan, which snapped a four-game losing skid. The Philippines remains in contention for a World Cup slot, trailing leaders Australia in Group E.
