Gilbert Bigio, Haitian conglomerate founder, dies at 91

Gilbert Bigio, a prominent Haitian businessman and founder of the GB Group, has died in Florida at the age of 91. His death was reported on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

Bigio built a massive conglomerate that diversified from steel production in 1972 into energy, telecommunications, logistics, and real estate. His business influence extended significantly into the Caribbean, notably through the acquisition of Chevron Texaco's fuel and aviation operations in the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and Saint Martin in 2012. This expansion included a vast network of service stations and terminals.

In recent years, Bigio's career was marked by international controversy. In December 2022, the Canadian government imposed economic sanctions on him, alleging that he and other members of the Haitian economic elite used their positions to facilitate illegal activities for armed groups, including money laundering.

The GB Group recently underwent a corporate rebranding, transitioning to a new identity known as B|G|O (Builders of Great Opportunities). Following Bigio's death, management of the group's interests has largely been handled by his son, Reuven Bigio.
