Gilberto Cárdenas, Leading Latinx Art Collector and Scholar, Dies at 79

Gilberto Cárdenas, a leading collector of Latinx art and professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Notre Dame, died on July 26 at his home in Austin, Texas, at the age of 79.

Over several decades he and his wife, Dolores Carrillo García, assembled a collection of roughly 20,000 Chicanx and Latinx artworks, emphasizing photography and prints. The couple donated more than 5,000 pieces – eventually exceeding 7,000 objects – to the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas, Austin, bolstering the museum’s Latinx art focus and prompting the hiring of its first associate curator of Latino art.

Cárdenas was praised as a pioneering advocate for Latinx artists, a mentor to students and scholars, and a key figure in expanding the visibility of Latino and Chicano art in academic and museum settings.
