Gilberto Gil inspired musicals debut in Brazil
Musical productions inspired by the life and work of Brazilian icon Gilberto Gil are making their way to various stages. The musical ‘Gil – Andar com Fé’, directed by Miguel Falabella and written by Newton Moreno, is set to debut at Teatro Santander on August 20. The production explores Gil’s career, including his period of exile in London during the military dictatorship, and features a cast portraying figures such as Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, and Gal Costa.
In Salvador, the musical ‘Domingo no Parque’ is holding a short run at Teatro Faresi. Inspired by Gil’s Tropicália classic, the show is directed by Alexandre Reinecke with musical direction by Bem Gil. Set in the early 1970s, the narrative incorporates elements of capoeira, dance, and resistance against the military dictatorship, highlighting Black cultural influences in Brazilian society.
